Abstract

WIDE Area in the power system which has been introduced to power system literature in the late 1980s. They are now commercially in power systems for purposes of monitoring, operation, and control. The wide area is a combination between the phasor measurement unit (PMU) and communication infrastructure (CI). In this paper, the location of the PMU and the CI can be optimized to involve system observability. There are a lot of methods to solve the optimal placement of PMU. The communication infrastructure is designed and implemented to collect the data from PMU and transfer data to the control center. In this paper CI hybrid wireless sensors including plug-in powered sensor nodes (PPSNs) and energy harvesting sensor nodes (EHSNs) can be utilized to increase the reliability of the communication system. The main objective of this paper is to minimize the total cost of PMU placement and the related communication infrastructure. System observability index (SORI) and zero injection bus (ZIB) cost are taken into consideration as a constraint in the objective function. The results showed that the communication structure of the system will be useful for reducing the required installation costs.
