Abstract

This study aims at investigating the impact of some personal and cognitive factors on the formation of "ego identity" among Palestinians adolescents in Jerusalem. A simple random sample of(123) adolescents, with ages ranging from(16-22), was randomly selected for the study . An adapted Objective Measurement of Ego Identity Scale (OMEIS) version, which is a 64 item scale and a 0.86 Cronbach alpha coefficient, were applied on the participant in the study. In addition, ten semi-structured interviews were carried out in order to investigate the effect of the independent factors affecting the formation of ego identity such as the social upbringing, and the degree of religiousness. Data were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively and the study shows that: There are no gender differences on both ideological identity and interpersonal identity and on both foreclosure dimension and the moratorium dimension, but there are gender differences on both achievement dimension and the diffusion dimension in favor of males. Also there are differences (in the ideological identity and in the foreclosure dimension) between the younger and older participants in favor of the older participants. Moreover there are differences in the interpersonal identity due to degree of religiosity in favor of moderate degree of religiosity and there are differences between the degrees of religiosity on the moratorium dimension in favor of high religiosity. In addition there are differences in the foreclosure dimension between various patterns of parental upbringing (excellent, fair, bad) in favor of the bad mode, The results also show differences in the moratorium dimension in favor of the fair mode of parental upbringing. The study offered a set recommendations associated with the results which can be utilized to cope with ego identity crises among Palestinian adolescents.
