Abstract

The study aimed at identifying the level of leadership abilities of academic department chairpersons at the Jordanian universities and its relationship with the level of professional development of the faculty members. To achieve the objectives of this study, a questionnaire was developed where its validity and reliability were assured. The study sample consisted of (461) faculty members from Jordanian universities. The study used the descriptive survey method in data collection. The results revealed that the level of leadership abilities of academic department chairpersons was medium, and the level of professional development of the faculty members was medium as well. The results also revealed that there was a positive relationship between the level of leadership abilities of the academic departments' chairpersons and the level of professional development of their faculty members. The researchers recommended, in the light of the study results, that the levels of leadership abilities of academic department chairpersons should be raised through conducting training workshops. It has been recommended also that the professional development for faculty members should continue mainly in scientific research and community service domains.
