Abstract

This article presents the Kurdish case within recent and historical regional contexts. The Kurdish issue is one of the longest standing problems dating back to the beginning of the twentieth century. However, this article recontextualizes the Kurdish issue within the post 2011 Arab Spring political landscape, which, during the Syrian Civil War and the rise of ISIL, reignited the Kurdish question. These complications have led to deep involvement of many regional powers, such as Turkey, Iraq, ISIS, various Kurdish parties, and the various actors in the Syrian conflict. This article considers the Kurdish identity and drive for autonomy within a hostile environment in the region, and a changing geographical landscape and evaluates existing and possible future resolutions to the Kurdish-Turkish conflict with a close analysis of the US position towards both parties.
