Abstract

The study aimed to determine the level of career future anxiety and its relationship to the features of optimism and pessimism among students in the Colleges of Applied Sciences in the Sultanate of Oman. The study used the analytical descriptive method based on the study of the correlation between variables. The sample consisted of 726 students (125 males and 601 females). The study used the scale of career future anxiety (Al Sharifin, Bani Mustafa and Tashtoosh, 2014) and the Arabic inventory of optimism and pessimism (AbdulKhaleq, 1996). The results of the study indicated that the level of career future anxiety was low among the sample members and there were no statistically significant differences in career future anxiety due to the variables of gender and academic level. The results also concluded that there were no statistically significant differences in the characteristics of optimism and pessimism due to the gender variable, while the differences were statistically significant in the pessimism and were attributed to the variable of academic level and in favor of the first and second levels. The results of the current study also indicated the possibility of predicting career future anxiety through the two features of optimism and pessimism, and the existence of an inverse correlation between career future anxiety and optimism, and a direct correlation between career future anxiety and pessimism. The study came out with a set of recommendations and suggestions.
