Abstract
This paper investigates the theoretical foundations in linguistic
developments in Arabic. It introduces a linguistic model which approximates to
general linguistics, but it isolates the Arabic linguistic heritage while putting
forward verious aspects of the development of the science of linguistics. From
the basic rules of Arabic linguistics, it proceeds to show the general linguistic'
concepts common to both Arabic and other languages; with the veiw of
presenting this common ground as a contrribuation to theoretical and applied
linguistics. The paper also seeks to present a model in applied linguistics to be
used for teaching both native and non-native speakers of Arabic.
