We introduce a new approach to the problem of finding sets of m mutually unbiased bases which are compatible with a given space Cd, by translating it into an optimization procedure for a given pair (m,d). In addition, our procedure leads to new sets of basis such that they may approach those hypothetical ones for m = 4.
