Abstract

The Field of Argumentation

Argumentation has become one of the favorite subjects of literature in recent years, be it philosophical, logical, linguistic or psychological. In part, this interest is due to a certain almost general infatuation with everything that has to do with Communication. But on the other hand, it answers more fundamental questions, such as the status of ordinary rationality in relation to scientific rationality, or of natural logic in relation to formal logic. In this field, the theoretical approaches to argument are nonetheless so manifold, and their conceptions of the limits of its field so heterogeneous, that it is almost impossible to identify any unity whatsoever. The undertaking is all the more difficult as the currents come from different disciplines, each having distinct theoretical or experimental paradigms.
