Abstract

Preserving and developing the main traffic routes within the areas of distinctive value is an important topic, as they contain buildings and villas with a distinctive architectural style in addition to the distinctive general character. The path of Al-Qanal Street, Al-Khashab Canal, was previously chosen due to its importance, as it is located in Al-Sarayat within the Maadi area of distinctive value. It is located in the heart of Maadi within a classified area with a protection zone (A), which means a maximum protection zone, in addition to the fear of turning the path of Al-Qanal Street into a fast traffic axis, especially since the width of the street allows for this, as happened in other areas, by removing the gardens that are in the public spaces with all the trees they contain, which leads to the loss of value as a result of changing the urban fabric and losing the distinctive general character. The boundaries and foundations for preserving the Maadi area were set through the Central Administration for Studies, Research and Policies at the National Authority for Urban Coordination at the Ministry of Culture, approved by the Supreme Council for Planning and Urban Development by Resolution No. 14/22/06/27. Some theoretical concepts, standards and specifications related to preservation and protection zones were addressed, especially for the Maadi area of distinctive value and stipulated according to Law No. 119 of 2008 and its executive regulations for the year 2011, then moving from the reference study to the field study of the Canal Street path through monitoring and documentation using images, field surveying, analysis and evaluation using maps and drawings and presenting statistics and comparisons, then conducting a questionnaire to survey opinion and participation to determine the extent of society’s awareness of the importance of the subject, in addition to conducting some interviews with residents of the area and presenting some proposals to reach results and recommendations. From this standpoint, the research represents a call to pay attention to the main movement paths in areas of distinguished value in general and the Canal Street movement path in particular, as it is necessary to educate current generations about the importance of preserving it because it represents the thought and culture of society and benefiting from it and developing it to hand it over to future generations.
