Abstract

The Research and Development Department is one of the influential departments in the production system to reach a high-quality product, which carries aesthetic and functional properties that satisfy the needs of customers. R&D can compete for the diversity of companies that provide similar products, and with the presence of imported products that fiercely compete with our glass products in the same markets. The local productive institutions working in the field of production of glassware are most in need of applying R&D standards to raise the production efficiency, in addition to obtaining some competitive advantages and resistance to risks resulting from the external environment changes. Accordingly, it is important to activate R&D in this industry to achieve the goals of these institutions. The manual production of glassware in Egypt faces several problems in terms of energy crises, the lack of some raw materials locally and the lack of trained workers who can produce high-quality products. Handicrafts that depend to a large extent on the skill of the worker not available in many cases. The large number of people with great experience in this industry is transferring from one factory to another, in addition to production defects resulting from the formation processes using metal molds - which is one of the largest and most important problems facing the manual glass industry. This is mainly due to multiple obstacles start from the high cost of molds and difficulty in maintenance operations and coatings required, in addition to defects in the products formed in them. The research problem appeared in the lack of activation of the R&D department in many local glass factories, which led to the deterioration of their products and their inability to compete. Objective: is to present the importance of R&D to the local glassmaking companies, to improve their level of quality, by providing them with solutions to some of the production problems associated with the technology of covering the internal surface of the metal molds; to improve the quality of the surface appearance of glass products in the method of manual blowing production. Assumptions: that a set of solutions can be developed for some of the production problems that take place on glass in metal molds by hand blowing using appropriate insulation materials. Importance is to serve the local industry in the field of glass products industry, by increasing its ability to compete, by providing a model of how to reach solutions for some of the problems of causing defects in the production of glass produced in metal molds using research and development. The research follows the experimental methodology. Studying the working mechanisms of the research and development (R&D) department internally and with the rest of the departments in the factory. It was possible to experiment with some types of raw materials to use to isolate glass from the surface of the metal molds used in manual blowing to obtain products with Higher quality, mostly for export. The high-quality glass was obtained with an unexpected higher production efficiency of 108.5%, with an increase of 1,340 pieces in 8 shifts, bearing in mind that medium-skilled workers were the ones blowing
