Identifying Challenges Facing Expanding Date Palm Cultivation and Dates Production in Tihama, Yemen – Obstacles and Soloution

Abstract

This study carried out at Tihama region of Yemen in 2016. The purposes of the study was to identify the main challenges facing the date palm cultivation and dates production as perceived by farmers. The study utilized descriptive research approach in order to fulfil its objectives. Forty four date palm farmers were randomly selected from Wadi Al-Jah, Hodeida governorate and administrative questionnaire was used through personal interview. Obstacles and challenges for expanding date palm and increasing dates production facing the farmers in the region were demonstrated and discussed. Recommendations and solutions were strongly suggested to improve the agricultural systems and agricultural inputs for expanding date palm cultivation and increasing dates production in the region.
