Abstract

This paper investigates the use of advanced oxidation method (AOM) (ozone/hydrogen peroxide/ UV) in the removal of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) which is a widely used herbicide, and is considered as persistent pollutant. Kinetics of the oxidation process was studied. The effect of parameters such as ozonation rate, dose of UV, H2O2 initial concentration, pH and temperature were examined. Also the role of partial oxidation intermediates (2,4,D. derivatives) was followed, partial reaction orders and the overall reaction order have been achieved. Reaction rate equation is introduced. The combination of H2O2/O3/U.V. was the most efficient system, the oxidation was found to have a first order kinetics in each of O3,H2O2 and UV intensity. Higher oxidation rates were obtained in increasing pH, rising temperature was a promotional factor. It was observed that in the case of retiary combination (H2O2/O3/U.V.), three parallel oxidation processes were taking place.
