Abstract
Reading is considered the key skill needed science students in Palestine mainly because the majority of science textbooks, magazines and journals are written in English. However, students face many difficulties especially in extracting meaning from specialized texts. Therefore, the purpose of this study was tow fold: first, to determine whether the lexical problems of students stem from technical vocabulary or from weakness in general English and second, to show how language teachers can determine which vocabulary their students need in order to read scientific texts.
For the purpose of this study, a scientific text was selected and data were collected by: asking freshman science students, English language teachers and subject specialists to identify the vocabulary which they think will hinder the comprehension of the text, and by analyzing the lexical component of the selected text.
