Abstract

The Arab led all nations in Lexicon writings. They knew two kinds of dictionaries: dictionaries of words, and dictionaries of meanings, in addition to the books of special subjects. They left a lot of writings, each was specialized in one specific subject, such as the Book of Well, the Sheep, the Weapons, the Camels, the Rain, the Plants, and the Horses, etc . . .

They wrote encyclopedias, each talks about different and wide knowledge, such as Al-Jahiz's book, Al-Hayawan, and Al-Dumairy's book,(the life of animal).

This paper studies these three kinds of lexicons, It also presents and analyzes the method and the content.

The paper concludes by showing the importance of these old writings, for composing new specialized dictionaries, which cover the different fields of knowledge and sciences; to contribute in a new Arabic scientific progress.
