Abstract

This study aims at looking at the pictures in the text books of Islamic education at the low basic level in Jordan to find out the meanings of the pictures and unseen implications.To achieve this objective, the content analysis approach was used, analyzing the ideas (themes) as the base of the unit in the textbook for the three grades of the basic level for the academic year 2010/2011.This analysis tackles the importance of the picture role in the targeted books the values, and the meanings of the messages these pictures deliver. Content analysis list included five domains: doctrine, worshiping, social, ethical, and aesthetical-emotional. The quantitative analysis reflects that the worshiping domain is the most frequent, followed by the ethical and the aesthetical-emotional, and social, the domain of doctrine comes in the last position. The qualitative analysis reveals that some pictures deliver wrong messages contradicting the goals desired to achieve among the students. Moreover, other pictures convey a miseducative experience.The researcher suggests activating the use of picture in school curriculum, specially the role of the Muslim women in building her home, and developing her nation. He also recommends that pictures should be purposefully selected and designed for the Islamic Education curriculum at all school levels.
