Abstract

The objective of the study is to analyze the crisis between Hamas and Jordan in 1999. Based primarily on the archives of Al-Quds newspaper, the study reviews the developments of the crisis which started upon the ascension of King Abdullah II to the throne of Jordan in 1999. It explores the internal causes of the crisis: the closure of Hamas offices and the subsequent procedures carried out by the Jordanian government against some Hamas members. In addition, the study addresses the external causes of the crisis: Jordan’s relationship with the PLO, and the external pressures by the countries, particularly the USA, which provides economic assistance to Jordan.

The study also reviews the position of Muslim Brotherhood toward the crisis and the efforts they made to resolve the crisis and bring closer the views of both sides. The study reveals the positions of the other Jordanian parties and currents, including the position of the Jordanian House of Representatives. The study concludes by reviewing the consequences of ending the crisis between the two sides and the reactions of the parties concerned.
