Abstract

This study investigated the degree to which the upper basic stage social studies school teachers employ local history in their teaching in the schools of Irbid Governorate, Jordan. For the purpose of the study, the researchers developed a questionnaire that included 45 times which was categorized in four domains (i.e., selecting local history topics, introducing the teaching using local history, using local environment in historical field study, and using local history in classroom). A total of 183 teachers and 15 educational supervisors participated in the study.

In general, the results related to the questionnaire’s four domains showed a high degree of employing local history by social studies teachers. Moreover, the results also revealed that there are no statistical differences related to gender, specialization and experience. There are statistical differences related to job in all domains, in the second, and in the third domains in favor of educational supervisors. Results showed statistical differences related to qualification in all domains, in the first, third, and fourth domains in favor of graduate level. The study proposed some recommendations.
