Abstract

This study aimed to test the effectiveness of a training program for the Jordanian sign language in developing the interpreting skills of a sample of special education students who are expected to work with the deaf students after graduation. The study sample is consisted of (70) students from the Special Education major in the University of Jordan who have joined the courses of sign language held by the Deanship of Students Affair at the university. The training program was applied to the sample and data collection using a test of sign language interpreting skills prepared by the researcher for this purpose. The quasi-experimental design was used for this study. The distribution of the sample was divided into two groups: control (36) students, and experimental (34) students, within different levels of experience and cumulative average. Results showed the effectiveness of the training program in developing sign language skills for the study sample. The researcher recommends that more studies should be made in the Jordanian sign language with clarifications of its rules and its education terminology. The study also recommends amending the existing programs of the training of the Jordanian sign language to include the rules of sign language and the academic and educational concepts related to this field, to be used effectively by the sign language interpreter inside the educational institution.
