Abstract

The article deals with the current importance of social and emotionalcompetence in schools; new trends in educational psychological literaturecalls for the development of students’ social and emotional skills as well asfor development of their academic skills and the acquisition of knowledgeand information. Students’ social and emotional ability are sufficiently linkedto self- awareness, social awareness, and managing emotions and behavior.This articles points out to one side of social awareness that is empathy, and yetto another side which is associated with emotions and behavior managementthat is self- regulation. These two sides reduce bullying and aggressivebehavior among students in schools. The student, who shows a high level ofempathy and self- regulation, reduces his/ her aggressive behavior as he/ sheis trying to understand the other party, and sympathy with the other party’ssorrows and sufferings. In addition, he/ she controls and regulates his/ herbehavior in a way to help him/ her in his/ her academic achievement. Suchas: reduced activity, learning, attention, and follow the instructions and theorganization of work tools. The role of the school lies in helping students tobe emotionally involved with one another, take each other’s point of view intoconsideration and organize ideas, emotions and behavior in different socialsituations within the school environment.
