Motivation Level Towards Learning A Foreign Language (English) in A Sample of Students at The University of Jordan

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the levels of motivation to learn English among a sample of Jordanian university students, and its relationship to some variables. The study sample consisted of (412) students, studying an English language course at the universities of Jordan. A five scale questionnaire containing (66) items has been applied, covering (10) sub dimensions. After its psychometric properties were verified, the results of the study showed medium to large levels of motivation to learn English. Also it showed statistically significant differences in the levels of motivation to learn English, in some domains, due to both the sex of the student, and his study level, and the correlation between each of the student average and some of the domains of motivation for learning. The study was concluded with some recommendations.
