Abstract

This study aims at exploring the manifestations of alienation in the poetry of the Jordanian poet Ali Taha Al-Nubani. His poetic experience seems to be entrenched in the sense of alienation, from which he can be released. This alienation appears in his poetry in various forms, most prominent include social, political, and spiritual alienations. Additionally, alienation in his poetry appears through lack of human affiliation, the sense of dependency and thingness, on both the individual and collective levels. Accordingly, the human being becomes unable to act electively and to make his options freely. In his poetry, many factors impact his sense of alienation, including the capitalist and industrial nature of the society in the modern era, the absence of solutions for human dilemmas such as life, freedom, and anxiety. In al-Nuban’s poetry, owning freedom and getting rid of alienation depends on having a society in which people are allowed to freely express their views toward themselves and being. This study scrutinizes the phenomenon of alienation in al-Nubani’s poetry in three dimensions: the attitude toward time, alienation between individuality and community, and through the relationship with women.
