Abstract
The objective of the present work is to develop an efficient estimation procedure to enhance the precision of estimate of a finite population variance under simple random sampling without replacement (SRSWOR) scheme. Utilizing information on median and coefficient of kurtosis of an auxiliary variable, an improved ratio-type estimator of population variance has been suggested. The properties of the proposed estimation procedure have been examined and empirical studies are performed to show the dominance over some contemporary estimators. Suitable recommendations are made to the survey practitioners.
