Developing countries across the world are making attempts to use Information and Communication Technology in order to achieve development goals and India also has attempted to harness ICTs for development. ICT has the capacity to alter the way society functions and is governed. The word e-governance would establish a link between the two. E-governance is described as the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) to deliver government services to citizens. India is a populous country where e-governance is fast becoming a buzzword. ICT tools are making public services safer, easier to access and more efficient than ever before. It has actually revolutionized and now we need to be happy for the fact that rural and urban we all are together. Information Technology has made impressive inroads into Indian society and the government alike. It is widely viewed as a tool having tremendous potential to solve various problems facing society and improve the functioning of the government. It is also recognized that the process of induction of Information Technology is not a straightforward task. It needs careful planning, tactful handling and sufficient patience to ensure a smooth transition to the era of Information Technology- led development in India. The main objective of this paper is to analyze the impact of ICT on rural development and in governance. Also, to understand the meaning and importance of ICT. Finally, it discusses the role of ICT in rural development, as well as the potential and difficulties that it presents.
