Abstract

A Bent Laminated Glass is commonly used in the residential and commercial structures, its methodology is not present in the curves and tables at the ASTM E1300. Therefore, it has become a need for architects to use basis for this type of glass. To the best of authors ‘knowledge, no one study the bent laminated glass in details. A variety of safety glass that has lately gained popularity in the construction sector is modern laminated glass. Given that it offers a safe failover capability, it is perfect for the automotive industry. Double-lite glass is produced using two or more thin layers of glass that have been permanently joined together using polyvinyl butyral (PVB), ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), or another interlayer material substance between layers that stops glass shards from breaking failure are decreased by falling from the supporting frame. The lack of trustworthy sources of information that provide insight into the structural behavior of bent glass units is a significant issue for designers Therefore, in this article, experimental results for such bent laminated glass lites tested under compression loading are presented and discussed. Four Bent Glass Lites with different thicknesses were experimentally tested up to failure under compression pressure. Behavioral properties; analysis was performed including ultimate loads, deflections, and failure modes. A closed chamber was created as a support system for the test lite and glued it to the chamber with structural silicone. The internal air in the chamber was evacuated to simulate a positive pressure on the outer surface of the lite under test. A displacement transducer and strain gauge were attached to the tested system to measure the displacement and strain as the pressure in the chamber decreased. The results of the analysis were presented and discussed. The shell element is the best element capable of simulating a thin Bent glass lite. The result from this experimental study provides findings for non-linear bent laminated glass for further investigations and developments on such type.
