Abstract

Purpose – The application of Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology in Egypt is hindered by inadequacies or insufficient experience, as only a handful of companies and institutions are able to create three-dimensional models using this technology. Additionally, the majority of architectural education curricula do not fully incorporate BIM. The majority of Egyptian graduates in the fields of architecture, construction, and engineering lack the necessary knowledge or expertise to use BIM technology because universities in Egypt primarily focus on teaching CAD technology rather than BIM technology. This may be because BIM technology is still relatively new or because there aren't many academic cadres who can use it. This research is built up upon exploring the concepts of building information modelling (BIM) adoption and strategy formulation with the aim to develop a strategy for implementing BIM in the Egyptian construction industry.

Methodology – The development of the BIM implementation strategy was based on two pillars, namely the literature review and results of the survey questionnaire. The review of literature helped investigating the BIM challenges and international strategies developed to implement BIM worldwide.

Findings – The research presented results of the survey questionnaire which mainly concluded that although there are a number of engineers who are experienced and well known with BIM, a number of companies and offices are still mostly not interested in applying BIM because there is no mandatory force to apply it, but it is up to personal opinion, also presented recommendations to assist policymakers in Egypt to facilitate BIM implementation.
