Abstract

This research aims to reveal the possible relationship between critical thinking and general mathematical reasoning (mathematics) among a sample of students from the Departments of Psychology and Psychological Counseling at the Faculty of Education at the University of Damascus, the number of its members was 283 male and female students from the third year, and it is an intentional stratified sample available using the curriculum. Analytical descriptive, using the California Critical Thinking Scale CCTSI, and the General Inference Factor Scale, where the research is based on the hypothesis that performance in critical thinking is positively related to performance by general (mathematical) inference, and the research tried to answer the following question:

Are there differences in critical thinking and general (mathematics) reasoning according to the variables of gender, high school diploma and academic specialization?

After testing the hypotheses, the following results were obtained:

1- There is a positive correlation between critical thinking and general (mathematical) reasoning.

2- There are differences with respect to the gender variable (males, females) in critical thinking and general (mathematical) reasoning in favor of males.

3- There are differences with regard to the secondary certificate variable (scientific, literary) in critical thinking and general (mathematical) reasoning in favor of the scientific branch.

4- There are differences with respect to the variable of academic specialization (psychology, psychological counseling) in critical thinking and good general mathematical reasoning, the specialization of psychology.
