Abstract
This study aimed to measure the role of the educational counselor in raising the awareness of the family in the field of child protection in the schools of Ramallah and Al-Bireh Governorate. For this purpose, a three-axis questionnaire was designed. The first axis dealt with the social role of the educational counselor, the second with his/her academic role, while the third dealt with his/her psychological awareness role. The study population consisted of (114) counselors. The study was conducted on a stratified random sample of 57 male and female counselors. The questionnaire, which employed the descriptive analytical approach and which adopted the five-point scale, was distributed to all members of the sample. For the first axis, the study concluded that the arithmetic mean of the total degree of the social role was (4.39). The items which got the highest scores were respectively as follows: “I urge the family to listen to their children regarding their social concerns,” with an average of (4.56), “I advise the family to develop the ability of teamwork in their children,” with an average of (4.56), and “I advise the family to reinforce the positive values of their children,” with an average of (4.54).
The arithmetic mean of the total score for the second axis, i.e. the academic role, was (4.34), and the items which got the highest scores were respectively as follows: “ I inform the family of the effect of frequent absence on the low achievement of the children,” with an average of (4.54), “ I define for the family the jobs which the Palestinian work market needs taking into account the capabilities of their children,” with an average of (4.53), and“ I clarify to the family the methods of treating the poor educational achievement of children with an average of (4.46). The arithmetic mean of the total score for the third axis, i.e. the psychological role, was (4.39), and the items which got the highest scores were respectively as follows: “I guide the family to take into account the psychological foundations of their children,” with an average of (4.56), “I advise the family to follow the psychological needs of their children,” with an average of (4.51), and “I guide the family on how to provide psychological support to raise their children’s spirits to overcome the difficult circumstances they go through,” with an average of (4.49). The study concluded that there were significant statistical differences at (α≤0.05) among the means of the educational counselors in raising the family’s awareness role in Ramallah and Al-Bireh Governorate, which were attributed to the variables of gender in the academic field in favor of females, experience in favor of (5-10 years), and the field of specialty in favor of psychiatric guidance and psychology.
