Abstract

In this research I titled, “Abu l -Salt al - Hirawi and the Problematic Issue of both Narrating (Riwayah) and Deep Comprehension (Diraya) of Prophetic Statements”, I pursue the biography of a scholar well-known for his speech arguments that reflected sophisticated knowledge and acute acumen in his age, which in turn helped curb the spread of Jahami and Mu’tazila into the House of Caliphate. The life of this intellectual has stimulated me to write this research that may help expose and reactivate some of the bright and beneficial aspects of his attitudes, and this may indeed help us reach some answers to a number of puzzling questions raised by critics and readers.

I attempted my study through a historical, analytical investigative approach to reach some important conclusions that can be seen as follows: (1) Abu l- Salt’s educational and pedagogical role sustained the longevity of the Islamic laws; (2) his great literature was pretty resounding to his followers; and (3) though he is still ranked as one of the best debaters and not a fabricator, Abu l- Salt transmitted some unreliable and unauthentic narrations that did not meet any approval from other narrators who are considered more trustworthy and reliable. This will in turn deprive him of being one of ‘Al-Thiqat’ in Isnad (chain of narration). Thus, his narrations are not referred to as hujjah (argumentation) but rather as good examples for learning.
