Abstract

This study aimed to reveal the effect of competency in the second language on working memory and cognitive flexibility among bilingual students in Akko city. To achieve the objectives of the study, tools were developed to detect the level of working memory capacity, cognitive flexibility, and competency in the second language. The study sample consisted of (274) bilingual secondary school students. Results of the study showed that both of working memory capacity and cognitive flexibility levels among bilingual students came with a high degree, and there were significant statistical differences in working memory and cognitive flexibility due to the effect of gender variable, there were significant statistical differences in working memory rank due to the effect of academic major variable, and there were no significant statistical differences in the cognitive flexibility due to the effect of the academic major variable, and there were significant statistical differences in the working memory and the cognitive flexibility in the competency in a second language.
