Impact of Mega Projects Construction on Surrounding Traffic - A Case Study of the Oncology Institute
Abstract
The adverse effects of traffic on the quality of life have become undeniable, with congestion, noise, and pollution significantly impacting urban environments. Large construction projects risk exacerbating existing traffic problems or creating new ones without proper traffic planning and management. Notably, most existing studies predominantly concentrate on the post-construction phase of buildings, neglecting the broader temporal spectrum of project development. The importance of traffic studies is further underscored as they provide a proactive framework for planners, policymakers, and developers. By delving into the nuances of traffic impact during the entire project lifecycle, this research, instead of our research, not only identifies potential challenges but also formulates targeted solutions. This forward-looking perspective empowers stakeholders to make informed decisions, prioritizing mitigating traffic-related problems and enhancing the overall quality of life in urban environments. Previous research has focused on investigating a building's impacts on surrounding traffic after completion. However, traffic conditions beforehand and during construction are just as vital. Pre-development traffic studies can establish baseline volumes and identify at-risk roads. Modeling projections aid infrastructure sizing. Ongoing monitoring through the construction phase allows for adjusting management strategies to minimize disruptions. By assessing traffic across pre-planning, execution, and post-occupancy, this research aims to determine the quality-of-life consequences better and provide recommendations. A holistic traffic evaluation approach supports informed decision-making to design new developments appropriately and upgrade existing networks for maximum mobility and livability. They are addressing traffic proactively to manage urban growth sustainably.
