Abstract

Natural lighting is one of the basic criteria for the architectural design process. It is one of the most important data that contributes to the design of architectural spaces and the manifestation of aesthetic values. In light of the global technological development and the scientific and information revolution, the role of the architect comes in highlighting the importance of natural lighting and its positive role in human biology, and reducing effort and psychological pressure in the event of Its use is an alternative to artificial lighting, as it increases human efficiency and achievement at work, in addition to giving a sense of time and weather, and adding continuous dynamism to the building throughout the year. Natural lighting is the basis of architecture and creates a beautiful environment and a sense of place, adding beauty and creating life inside the building. The optical design of architectural spaces varies according to the diversity of the spaces and the diversity of human activities in them. The problem lies in the increased reliance on artificial lighting and the lack of interest in natural lighting and how to employ it in spaces and buildings, because modern architecture lacks the benefit of natural lighting in design. Given the role of natural lighting as an important element in applying the principles and objectives of sustainability to achieve sustainable building systems, the research aims primarily to study the design patterns of modern natural lighting using building elements “facades and roofs” and how to benefit from the capabilities of natural lighting and its contribution to achieving sustainability using natural lighting. In buildings (daylighting) is a strategic goal that modern architecture depends on to achieve sustainable and green architecture that is suitable for future cities.
