Abstract

Effective construction safety system may be a necessity to reduce work-related injuries and occupational diseases and may gain job satisfaction which improve productivity and save time/cost. Although the safety regulations in Egypt have already been issued, safety practices in construction sites actually varies from one contractor to another. Therefore, this research aims to track the legal framework for safety administration responsibility in Egypt which was found to be incomplete. The safety standards were extracted according to the safety regulations at Egyptian Work law No. 12 at 2003 AD and according to the deficiencies in safety administration responsibility system. The safety standards were divided into two branches to face "incomplete administration hazards" and "technical hazards". In addition, another objective of paper is to evaluate safety practices. To find out this objective, questionnaire surveys were conducted for construction engineers to measure the impact importance and the performance of the safety standards. The importance of safety standards' impact on level of workforce productivity was examined by using the relative importance index. However, the importance performance analysis was used to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the Egyptian safety system practices. It was found that the strengths and weaknesses generally lie in technical hazards branch.
