Abstract

Design management is a factor in the growth of organizations that ensures its continuity and success in developing its products and services to reach local and global leadership. There is a lack of a clear concept and role of design management in architecture and design companies. Therefore, this study comes to highlight the roles of design management and its tools that used to manage the work optimally. The research questions were the following: what are the roles of the design management department? What tools does it use to accomplish the work? What type of tools? Is it traditional or electronic? The research aimed to define and clarify the roles of design management at different design levels. The descriptive-analytical method was used, as data was collected from ten companies specialized in the fields of architecture and design, and three focused interviews were conducted with design managers. The results showed that the role of design management in a different level as follows: in the strategic level found in all activities that help to form and build design strategies and support decisions, by analysing the business environment from competitors and users, and making sure that these strategies are understood inside and outside the company. While in the tactical level found in managing systems and operations during the design work schedules, projects and operations. Finally, the operational level, found in evaluate the results, analyse and develop them, to ensure the effectiveness of the design in the business, whether in products, services, or environments, to ensure a good user experience, which guarantees a competitive advantage in the business environment. Besides, the results of the study showed that each company has its models, using technology to perform business more than traditional tools. The founding of this study may benefit the architecture and design companies, given the importance of design management in achieving competitive advantages among this large number of competitors in the business environment, both internally and externally.
