Abstract
Abstract:
Introduction: Orthodontist tend to use one of the 2 bracket slot sizes available either the 0.018” or 0.022” bracket slot. Till now there is no reliable scientific evidence that indicates if any of them has a superior effect on the duration of teeth alignment. The aim of this study is to compare alignment duration between 0.018 and 0.022-inch bracket slot systems.
Subjects and methods: 14 Eligible participants having an age range of 14-22 years were randomly allocated to 2 groups (7 in each group). Group I: 0.018-inch and Group II: 0.022-inch slot (American orthodontics Mini master Roth prescription brackets). Same wire sequence was used in both groups with the exception of the last wire which was 17.25 SS in Group I and 19.25 SS in Group II. Number of visits for patients in each group were recorded till reaching full alignment.
Results: The number of visits in Group I ranged between 6 to 8 with an average of 7±0.58 visits. However, the number of visits in Group II was between 7 and 9 with an average of 8±0.58 visits. There was a statistically significant differenceregarding alignment duration between the two treatment groups.
Limitations: It was not possible to blind the clinician and only mild and moderate cases were included in the study with no severe or extraction cases.
Conclusions: There was statistically significant difference in alignment duration between 0.018-inch and 0.022-inch slot bracket systems. The mean difference between both groups is one less visit in group I (0.018”) which could be not significant clinically.
