Abstract

The study aimed to identify the attitudes of the students of Qassim University towards the use of social media for educational purposes and the obstacles of use in the light of some variables that include the academic specialization, the academic level, and computer experience. The study sample consisted of (120) students in the following disciplines (scientific and engineering - humanitarian and educational - health) it was conducted in the second semester of the academic year 1438/1439 H.

To measure the attitudes of the students of Qaseem University towards the use of electronic social media and the obstacles to their use, an attitude scale of (50) statements was developed, It was distributed on three axes: (the first axis: the preferred social media by students, it included 10 statements, the second axis: the uses of social media in the educational process, and included 27 statements, and the third axis: the obstacles to the use of social media, it included 13 statements. The consistency and coherency of the different axes of the scale were calculated by calculating the correlation coefficients between the scores of the scale axes and the total score. The stability of the scale and its sub-axes were verified using the alpha Cronbach stability coefficient.

The results of the current study revealed that the attitudes of the students of Qassim University towards the use of social media for educational process are positive. There are no statistically significant differences in the attitudes of Qassim University students toward the use of social media for educational purposes due to different specialization or academic level. There are statistically significant differences at the 0.01 level of confidence in the directions of the students of the University of Qassim towards the use of social media for educational purposes due to the difference in computer experience. The differences are in favor of students with previous computer experience. The study also revealed that there were statistically significant differences at the level of 0.01 in the obstacles of the use of the students of the University of Qassim of social media for educational purposes due to different specialization. While there are no statistically significant differences in the obstacles that impede the use of social media by students of Qassim University for educational purposes due to the different academic level, or the difference in computer experience.. The study revealed that the most popular means of electronic social media used by students of Qassim University for educational purposes is YouTube.
