Abstract

The study aimed to build a program based on the functional approach to develop language literacy skills for primary school students. To achieve the previous goal, the researcher prepared a list of the necessary language literacy skills for primary school pupils. The researcher also prepared an observation card to measure oral literacy skills and a test to measure listening, reading and writing literacy skills, and the researcher tested reliabilityandvalidityof these tools , then the researcher built a program based on the functional approachto develop language literacy skills for primary school pupils. The study program was applied to a sample of (30) pupils of the primary stage atAl-Faisaliah primary schoolin (Makkah Al-Mukarramah), where the researcher used the one-group design with the pre and post measurement for the same group.

The results of the study revealed the building of a list of 31 literacy language skills, which contained (8) listening skills, (7) oral skills, (11) reading skillsliteracy and (5) writing skills. The researcher also Built an observation card for oral literacy skills, a test for listening, reading and writing literacy skills. The results of the study also revealedthe effectiveness of the proposed program in developing language literacy skills for primary school pupils.

The study recommended that language literacy skills should be included in all levels of education, in a manner consistent with the mental and linguistic level of pupils in each stage. The study also suggested a set of research and studies that can be built to enrich the field of teaching and learning Arabic language
