Abstract

The present study aimed at revealing the level of the need for cognition and self-efficacy and the relationship between them among the students ofUmmAl-QuraUniversityin light of the variables of specialization and the level of study. The study used the descriptive correlative method. The study sample consisted of (350) male students in the bachelor's degree in various scientific disciplines and in the various academic years (, freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior) at Umm Al Qura University in Makkah. The researchers to gather the data of the study used the need for cognition scale of Cacipo and Petty (1982), and the self-efficacy scale (Schrier & Others), which was Arabized and codified by Jabour (2002).the psychometric characteristics were checked.

The study concluded that the average level of cognition required was medium. Also The level of self-efficacy in the study sample was medium. The results also indicated that there were differences in the need for cognition attributed to the specialization and in favor of students in the scientific colleges and the absence of differences attributed to the level of study in self-efficacy. Finally, the study pointed to the possibility to predict the need for cognition through self-efficacy on the scale as a whole. The study recommended the necessity to guide students to satisfy the need for cognition through the student services provided by the university in order to increase their self-efficacy, especially in humanities. Also to study this variable in light of its relationship with other variables such as the student's gender and its cumulative average
