Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine the level of science teachers' practice of metacognitive thinking skills in teaching scientific concepts, and to show the extent to which their estimates differ according to their level of teaching experience and their social gender.

To achieve this, a questionnaire was prepared for this purpose, consisting in its final form of (26) paragraphs, after verifying its validity and stability, and the paragraphs were distributed in three areas: planning, control, and evaluation. The questionnaire was applied to the available research sample, which consisted of (142) male and female science teachers in Amman Governorate during the first semester of the academic year 2010/2011. The research data was analyzed using statistical techniques that fit the nature of the research, including arithmetic averages, standard deviations, and binary analysis of variance.

The results of the research showed that the estimates of the research sample of the level of their practice of cognitive thinking skills in their teaching of scientific concepts as a whole is at an average level. The results also showed that the level of practicing (14) metacognitive thinking skill is at a medium estimation level, and that the level of practicing (12) metacognitive thinking skill is at a high level in the research sample, and indicated that there are no statistically significant differences in the averages of the research sample estimation of the level of their practice of those skills. In teaching scientific concepts, it is due to the different level of their teaching experience or to their social gender or to their interaction. The results of the research also showed the presence of a number of obstacles to the level of their practice of metacognitive thinking skills in teaching scientific concepts, and in light of these results, a number of related recommendations were made.
