Abstract
Objective: This study deals with intended meaning in the field of pragmatics through the analysis of “interrogatives” as a linguistic argumentative method in Tamim Al-Barghouti’s speech “Its entire liberation has begun” (tahriruha kuluha bada’). The analysis focuses on the structure, tools, linking words and rhetorical meanings of the interrogative structures within the context of discourse and their impact on the formation of argumentation, thus guiding the opinions of the addressees. Methodology: The study adopts a descriptive analytical method in analyzing interrogatives and their tools present in the speech in order to understand their rhetorical role. Results: The examination of Al-Barghouti’s speech in this paper revealed 20 instances of interrogatives including varied rhetorical connotations as disapproval, confirmation, negation, reproach…etc. The employment of a wide range of argumentative links and tools has a significant impact on strengthening the argumentation which the poet aimed at achieving while seeking implicit answers to his questionings via this argumentative approach. Recommendations: The study recommends applying applied linguistic studies on both ancient and modern texts, with more need for applying them to modern texts which hold literary, intellectual and national significance. Such studies enrich these texts and pave the way for new studies and better understanding.
