Abstract

This study aimed to identify the role of rehabilitative social welfare servicesin improving the quality of life among families with the mentally retardedchildren in East Jerusalem. The sample of the study consisted of (204) parentsof the mentally retarded children known to the welfare office in East Jerusalem,who receive rehabilitative services for the year 2011/2012, through acluster sample. The study used a descriptive approach based on the descriptionof the real situation through the questionnaire that was designed for thepurpose of the study, and was characterized by high of the validity and reliabilitywhich allow it to be considered suitable for the purposes of the study.The results showed that the total degree of the quality of life of familieswith the mentally retarded children from the viewpoint of parents was averagewith a percentage of (66.7%), the counseling and psychological healthgot the highest level in the quality of life, followed by awareness-raising towardsrights, then the social domain, and finally the economic domain of lifequality, which got the lowest level.The results indicated that no statistically significant differences werefound at the level of significance (α<0.05) in the quality of life of familieswith the mentally retarded children from the perspective of parents, dependingon the variable of sex in the social domain, counseling and psychologicalhealth, and economic domain, while significant differences were found in theawareness-raising towards rights domain, in favor of females.The results also showed that no statistically significant differences werefound at the level of significance (α≤ 0.05) in the quality of life of familieswith the mentally retarded children from the perspective of parents, dependingon the variable of the age of the retarded in the social domain, counseling andpsychological health, and awareness-raising towards rights, while differenceswere found in the economic domain, in that as the mentally retarded were gettingolder, the quality of life became lower in the economic side. Results also showedthat no statistically significant differences were found in the quality of life offamilies with mentally retarded children from the perspective of parents, dependingon the variable of the degree of disability, the number of retarded persons inthe house, family income, and the guardian (father/mother) in all aspects.
