Abstract
ThisstudyaimsatidentifyingthepredictedvalueoftheadmissioncriteriausedatQOUwhich,forthispurpose,tookintoaccountthestudent’soverallaveragealongwithhis/herEnglishlanguagegradeachievedintheGeneralSecondaryExaminationsinadditiontohis/hergradesinbothEnglishOneandEnglishTwoinordertoforetellhis/herSpecializedGrandPointAverage(SGPA)intheEnglishlanguagespecialization.ThestudypopulationcomprisesallQOUstudentsintheWestBankwhohavemettheadmissioncriteriaoftheEnglishlanguagespecializationandwhohavesuccessfullycompletedaminimumof(18)credithoursrequiredforthisfieldoutofatotalof(69)untiltheendofthefirstsemesteroftheacademicyear2011/2012.Thesizeofthestudypopulationis(1400)maleandfemalestudentsdistributedoveralltheuniversitybranches.Thestudysampleconsistsof(205)studentsenrolledatQOURamallahandAl-BirehBranchwhohavemettheabove-mentionedcriteriaregardingadmissioninthefieldofspecialty.Itis,infact,anaccessiblesampleselectedinlightoftheuniversity’sadministrativefacilities.TheresearcheremployedtheanalyticaldescriptivemethodologydependingonsomesecondarydataattainedfromtheofficialrecordsofthestudentsatQOURamallahandAl-BirehBranchinordertoanswerthestudyquestions.Pearsoncorrelationcoefficientwasusedinadditiontostep-wiselinearregressionanalysis.Thestudycameupwithanumberofconclusionsamongwhichwerethefollowing:1.Therearethreesignificantcriteriarelevanttopredicting(SGPA)whicharelisted,herebelow,inorder,accordingtothedegreeoftheirsignificance:theEnglishTwogradewhichalone,initself,interpreted45.7%ofvariationwithin(SGPA);followedbytheGeneralSecondaryExaminations’totalgrade,whichalongwiththeprecedingfactor,interpreted52.5%ofvariationwithin(SGPA);andfinallyEnglishOnegradewhich,alongwiththetwoprecedingfactors,contributedininterpreting57.2%ofvariationwithin(SGPA).2.ThereseemstobeasignificantriseinthepredictedvalueoftheadmissioncriteriausedatQOUinthefieldoftheEnglishlanguagespecializationrelatedtothemoreadvancementthestudentmakesinhis/herfieldofspecialty.Inthelightofthisstudy,theresearcherwouldliketoputforwardanumberofrecommendations,themostimportantofwhich,isretainingthethreeadmissioncriteriaadoptedbytheuniversityforselectingEnglishlanguagestudentsinadditiontolayingmorefocusonthecriterionofthestudent’sEnglishTwogradeasaresultofitshighpredictedvaluerelevanttotheSpecializedGrandPointAverage(SGPA)
