Abstract

This study aimed to identify the most critical periods that led to the emergence of play-based learning as a language instruction tool in the modern era. Additionally, it sought to investigate the effectiveness of using this method in English language instruction. Both chronological and thematic approaches were employed to present the data. The results indicated that the use of games to enhance language learning dates back to ancient societies such as Greece and Rome. However, key pioneers in this field include John Locke, Maria Montessori, Vygotsky, and Piaget. The study also found that utilizing play-based activities to improve language learning is beneficial when educational games are carefully prepared meaning they are purposeful, well-planned, and entertaining.
