Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a program based on symbolic communication in reducing challenging behaviors and improving social interaction among individuals with autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability in Jordan. The study sample consisted of 8 participants aged between 8 and 15 years, from the Autism Specialized Center in Amman. To achieve the aim of the study, a Challenging Behavior Scale, a Social Interaction Scale, and a training program were constructed. The validity and reliability of the tools were verified. The results indicated that there were statistically significant differences in the scores of the participants in the pre- and post-assessments of the Challenging Behavior Scale, with the differences favoring the post-test. The results also showed that there were statistically significant differences in the scores of the participants in the pre- and post-tests of the Social Interaction Scale, with the differences again favoring the post-measurement. The study concluded with recommendations related to the findings.
