Abstract
This study aimed to identify cognitive distortions and lifestyles of mothers of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the city of Irbid. The study sample consisted of 151 mothers of children with ASD, selected using a convenience sampling method. To achieve the objectives of the study, scales for cognitive distortions and lifestyles were developed, and their validity and reliability were verified. The results showed that the mean scores for the categories of cognitive distortions among mothers of children with ASD were ranked as follows: the "bipolar" category ranked highest with a score of 3.00, while the "selective abstraction" category ranked lowest with a score of 2.34. The results also indicated that the mean scores for the domains of lifestyles among these mothers showed that the "cooperative" domain ranked first at a high level (4.04), while the "avoidant" domain ranked last with an average mean score of 2.45. Additionally, the results revealed statistically significant differences in the "self-blame" domain, with differences favoring mothers under 35 years of age. Significant differences were also found in the "selective abstraction" domain based on the mother's employment status, with working mothers exhibiting higher scores. The findings indicated that there were no statistically significant differences related to the mother's educational level or the number of children in the family across all areas of cognitive distortions. Moreover, the results showed significant differences in the "dominant" domain, again favoring mothers who were younger than 35 years. There were no statistically significant differences (α = 0.05) relating to the mother's educational level, the number of children in the family, or the mother's employment status across all lifestyle domains. Lastly, a positive, statistically significant relationship was found between cognitive distortions and the "dominant," "avoidant," and "dependent" lifestyles, while no statistically significant relationship was identified between cognitive distortions and the cooperative lifestyle.
