Abstract
This study aimed to reveal the predictive ability of defensive pessimism on the academic ambition of graduate students at Yarmouk University considering various variables: gender, marital status, work, academic stage, and specialization. The study sample consisted of 292 male and female students from the second semester of the academic year 2021/2022, selected using convenience sampling. The researchers developed the scales for academic ambition and defensive pessimism to achieve the study objectives. The correlation coefficients for the items on the defensive pessimism scale, reflecting construct validity, ranged from 0.38 to 0.78. The internal consistency coefficient of the defensive pessimism scale was 0.79. Similarly, the correlation coefficients for the items on the Academic Ambition Scale, reflecting construct validity, ranged from 0.40 to 0.66, with an internal consistency coefficient of 0.83. The results indicated that the level of academic ambition among graduate students was high, while the level of defensive pessimism was moderate. The defensive pessimism and specialization variables predicted academic ambition, whereas the other variables did not predict any academic ambition. The defensive pessimism variable contributed primarily, explaining 6.40% of the total variance, followed by the specialization variable, which contributed 1.70% of the variance. The contribution of the remaining variables in explaining variance was not statistically significant at the 0.05 significance level (α=0.05).
