Abstract
Distance education is an integrated educational system which providesthe students with programs different than those of the traditional systems. Ituses more flexible teaching methods and modern technologies which allowthose who live far away from campuses to gain their college education. Thiseducational concept flourished in America and Europe, then was adopted byArab countries. That does not mean that our Islamic civilization had did nothave similar practices to facilitate the process of education.This research casts the light on the historical roots of distance educationto clarify the most important concepts related to the field, the actual practices,and the future of the concept.The research includes an introduction, and three themes:●● The first: Distance education in Islamic civilization.●● The second: Distance education in European universities.●● The third: Distance education in the Arab universities
