Abstract

This study aimed to examine the predictive ability of alexithymia in internet addiction among university students. The study population consisted of all university students registered at Yarmouk University during the first semester of the academic year 2020/2021, with a sample of 1,396 students selected through convenience sampling. The results showed no statistically significant differences in the responses of the sample members regarding the level of alexithymia based on the variables of sex and academic year. However, there were statistically significant differences in the responses related to the level of alexithymia based on the college variable, indicating that the level of alexithymia was higher among students in human colleges compared to those in scientific colleges. Additionally, there were statistically significant differences in the responses about the level of internet addiction based on academic year, with second-year students exhibiting higher levels of internet addiction than students in other years. Conversely, there were no statistically significant differences in the level of internet addiction based on sex or college. Finally, a positive correlation was found between the level of alexithymia and internet addiction, suggesting that a higher level of alexithymia among undergraduate students at Yarmouk University is associated with an increase in their level of internet addiction.
