Abstract

This study aimed to reveal the level of psychological and physical symptoms and the nature of the differences between them, considering various variables among Palestinian ex-prisoners released from Israeli prisons. The study sample consisted of 517 male and female ex-prisoners who were selected through convenience sampling. To achieve the study's aim, the psychological symptoms scale and the physical symptoms scale were used after establishing their validity and reliability. The results of the study showed that the level of psychological symptoms among the ex-prisoners was moderate, while the level of physical symptoms was low. Additionally, the study indicated that there were differences in the level of psychological symptoms related to the place of residence, particularly in the dimension of phobia. However, the results showed no differences in the level of psychological symptoms attributable to gender or the duration of imprisonment. The study also found no differences in the level of physical symptoms among the ex-prisoners attributed to any of the variables studied. In light of these findings, it is recommended to prioritize the mental health care of ex-prisoners upon their release from captivity.
