Abstract

The present study aimed at revealing the degree of Arabic language learning strategies of non-native speakers at Yarmouk University. To achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher used the scale of language learning strategies (SILL), derived from the compilation of Oxford (1990). The scale consisted of (50) items distributed to six areas: Memory strategies, Cognitive strategies, Compensation strategies, Metacognitive strategies, Affective strategies, and social strategies. A random sample of (87) non-Arabic speaking male and female students who are enrolled in the Bachelor of Arabic Language and Literature program and have reached a fourth-year level at Yarmouk University was chosen. The outcomes of the study revealed that the degree of language learning strategies of non-Arabic speaking students is moderate. Considering the findings, the researcher presents a few recommendations, the most important of which are: conducting training courses to prepare Arabic language teachers as a second language, defining language learning strategies for them, and providing appropriate methods for training language learners to select the appropriate strategies for them.
