Abstract

The study aimed at exploring the attitudes of Jordanian university youth towards digital media applications to raise awareness of the phenomenon of societal violence, where the researcher adopted the descriptive methodology, by developing an online survey as a study tool. The survey was distributed to a non-random sample (the Snowball sample) consisting of 305 university students in three universities (Yarmouk University, University of Jordan and Mutah University). Two media theories were used in the current study: the Media Dependency Theory as a main theory and the Expectancy-value theory as a supporting theory. The study found several results, the most important of which is that Instagram is the most used social networking site by Jordanian university youth. As for the most cases of societal violence that the sample follows up on these networks, is assault practiced on others. The researcher found that the majority of respondents use these networks to obtain information related to societal violence issues as they are easy to use, and that the majority of the study sample became concerned about some issues that are published on these networks. Most of the respondents believe that the most important role that these networks should play in combating the phenomenon of societal violence lies in preparing electronic awareness campaigns about the risks arising from it.
